Cannon River Winery 2016 Marquette

87 points

Bright, piercing aromas of blackberry and cassis show a nice black pepper and umami edge. Medium bodied, this gulpable red is quite fruity at its core with more black and blue fruits at the fore, with subtle, high-toned spice and black pepper savoriness without the overt oak footprint I've found in many Marquettes in the region. Low in tannin, but with fresh acidity that balances just a bit of sweetness here. If this were a wine made from an obscure native variety from Italy or Franch, New York City sommeliers would be falling all over themselves to put it on their "glou glou" wine lists.
