Glen Manor Vineyards 2015 Cabernet Franc

Glen Manor Vineyards 2015 Cabernet Franc

91 points

One of the 12 wines to make the Virginia Wineries Association 2019 Governor's Cup Case, this is a serious, somewhat burly expression of cabernet franc that took two days open on my table to reveal all of its cabernet franc glory.

Dense and concentrated, the nose is ripe with black currants, blackberries, and blueberries – with hints of campfire embers, spice, and dark-roast coffee that almost overwhelm some pretty sweet floral aromas.

Riper and bigger than most of the East Coast cabernet francs I taste, the alcohol (14.2% abv) is present but doesn't get in the way. The same concentrated black-and-blue berry qualities are front and center on the medium-to-full-bodied palate with layers of smoke, black pepper, dark chocolate, and dried herbs. By day three, the savoriness you'd expect from cabernet franc is a bit more pronounced with more herbs, more pepper and tobacco stepping in front of the chocolate and smoke flavors.

This is a wine that worth continuing to watch as it ages in bottle, but it's plenty delicious today as well.
