Dr. Konstantin Frank 2015 "Lena" Reserve
This one-of-a-kind blend of 44% cabernet sauvignon, 14% saperavi, 14% merlot, 14% cabernet franc, 14% pinot noir smells of ripe black cherries, blackberries and dried herbs with layers of vanilla and tobacco. There is a bit of smoky oak too, but it's in the background.
The palate is showy in its dark fruits and oak tannins, with a bit of juicy acidity. It's somewhat oaky and modern at the edges, but that nice core of dark berry and plum fruit carries the medium-bodied palate nicely. With a little air, some notes of cola and vanilla step forward just a bit.
This is wine proves a bit of a point – that a ripe, polished red blend like this can be made in the Finger Lakes – even if it isn't particularly expressive of the Finger Lakes region.
