Koenig Vineyards 2014 “Cuvee Amelia” Reserve Syrah

Koenig Vineyards 2014 "Cuvee Amelia" Reserve Syrah

92 points

Complex on the nose – especially after a couple days open – this Idaho syrah has ripe red and black fruit as its foundation with layers of licorice, charred meat, grilled summer herbs and black pepper.

Big but beautiful, the palate shows a similar melange of fruity and savory/umami qualities, with some high-toned floral flavors overlaid on top. It wears the 14.8% abv flawlessly with sweet red fruits that turn to blueberries and blueberry compote on days two and three open. Spicy and balanced, the tannins are starting to soften at the edges but still have a ways to go, I'd say. There is a distinct licorice note on the end of a long, savory finish.
