Monkshood Cellars 2016 “Whitewater Vineyard” Syrah

Monkshood Cellars 2016 "Whitewater Vineyard" Syrah

91 points

Beautiful, ripe-but-still-restrained syrah that is allowed to express itself rather than being beaten with new oak. Blueberries and black currants lead the nose with notes of pine forest underbrush, black licorice, white pepper and pencil lead.

Bigger and somewhat chewy, but still quite fresh, the full-flavored palate maintains a certain focus and restraint too. Black and blue fruits are joined by distinct notes of wet gravel, roasted black pepper-crusted meat, more licorice and herbs de Provence. Chewy tannins are starting to soften at the edges, but this wine will be even better with another couple years in bottle.
