Fjord Vineyards 2019 Estate Cabernet Franc

Cabernet franc is successfully grown and made into good-to-great wine across New York and when not overworked in the cellar, it can be among the most expressive varieties as well. That’s part of what makes this such an intriguing wine. It’s the rare Hudson River Region AVA cabernet franc that is left to speak for itself (instead of being heavily manipulated by the winemaker.)

Despite tasting many examples of Hudson Valley cabernet franc over the years, it’s still hard for me to define what sets the grape apart in the region. Too often the wines are about the winemaker than the grapes.

Not so here.

The nose is high toned with red raspberry, cranberry, and rhubarb as the primary aromas with subtle notes of leaf tobacco and sage at the edges. Juicy and fresh in style, the medium-light bodied palate is all about red berries and a pretty minty-herbal streak. There is a hint of vanilla here too as it sits in the glass. It’s not complex today, but I think with time in bottle some additional savory and tobacco layers might emerge. At $25, it’s a good value too.
